Gstaad has a new adress for swiss mountainlovers - well actually an old one that was redone, renamed and reopened - it is the former Steigenberger Hotel that I visited last weekend that has opened its doors after extensive renovations just little over 2 months ago. Its called the HUUS Hotel now, which is a name that already sounds charming to my swiss ears, afterall I love the feeling of coming home in any hotel - it is the single thing that probably most decides wether I like it overall or not.
Stunning Lobby Area & Rooms - Entering the Hotel the first thing one sees is one of the Hotels highlights: a beautifully designed and spacious lobby that just invites to hang out. The warm colours, rich textures and eye catching interior details are of award winning swedish design, and this charming cozy but sleek look that makes the lobby so striking is continued in each of the newly redone rooms of the hotel. I really loved the room, a super comfortable bed, with great sheets and thick pillows, easy to move blackout curtains, sitting area & table, peekabo bathroom and sleek tv - I loved pretty much everything about it.
No Snacks - Some points off for having zero food in the room, not even chocolate or nuts in the minibar, not to speak of any fresh fruits on the table.
Fully equipped with lots of 'Add-ons' - After arrival we went on hotel tour, also to discover some of the hotel history, about its renovation, and all the activities it offered. The HUUS Hotel displays a great variety of services without really specializing in any of them however. Guests will find meeting rooms suitable for events and off-sites, a sauna and wellness area offering classical massage treatments, as well as TV rooms with game consoles, childrens playrooms and more. The Hotel is family and dog friendly - but does not describe itself however as a 'family hotel.' Still, families with kids benefit from plenty of 'add-ons' such as free skiipasses, and skiigear for kids. Adults also enjoy some 'add-ons' too - the Hotel offers a variety of included activities such as guided tours, shuttle, guided winter walking and summer hiking tours so guests are certainly not likely to get bored during their stay.
Cool underground Bar & Tapas - Our hoteltour was followed by a pre-dinner cocktail and some tapas in the underground bar called 'La Cave' - which is an exiting stony cave venue reminding me somewhat of a disney diamond mining cave. The Tapas served are excellent, I especially enjoyed the green sauteed salty peppers and the drinks looked great aswell.
'Fish is Vegetarian' - Cocktails was followed by dinner in the Hotels La Vue Restaurant. The Team was super friendly, the location cozy with an open kitchen to peek over the chef's shoulders. The menu looked good too, with a nice variety of classics to choose from where I think most people would find something to their taste. Vegetarian choices were rather limited, I thought its a pretty funny anectdote to mention that I was told by the waitor that 'fish was vegetarian' - Vegan choices à la carte was zero, however the kitchen and staff was kind, and doing their best to provide an alternative. Me, looking to eat vegetarian, ordered a delicious tomato pasta that I really enjoyed, and the vegan participants of our group were served grilled vegetables with boiled potato.
Breakfast - The next morning after enjoying a long and good nights sleep I headed to the breakfast room to discover a pretty perfect breakfast buffet with everything my heart desired - even ready cooked oats - which is what I eat at home all the time. So putting together my plate with some porridge, fresh fruits, a crepe, orange juice, tea and some breadrolls I did once again feel just like at home.
Overall I really enjoyed my stay, I think the Hotel is well above average for 4 Stars, really beautifully done and most importantly with kind people working there. I recommend the Hotel to any families or couples wanting to discover Gstaad and looking for a decent rate yet still gorgeous comfortable place to stay at.
